There’s a Reason Our Sign is Green . . .

March 27, 2012

. . . because it’s pretty. (Although, if you ask the guys, I’m sure they’d give you a more in-depth and manlier history.)

But here at Better Bulk, we’re making little efforts wherever we can to go a little more green.

A few months ago, a customer asked to buy a bag, since she’d forgotten hers at home. Before I could take her nickel, the customer behind her offered up a spare “green bag” that she had brought along. Inspired by this act of both human kindness and earth-friendliness, we implemented our new Take a Bag, Leave a Bag initiative.

Similar to the “Take a Penny, Leave a Penny ” jar, customers have been bringing spare “green bags” and plastic bags they’ve purchased elsewhere (thanks to the new Toronto government plastic bag laws, we will no longer be accepting old plastic bags to the program, only cloth or “green” bags) to be reused by those who seldom commute home with shopping bags in tow. So far, it’s been working out pretty well. More often than not, people seem excited to find a purpose for the old bags cluttering up their closets, and we’ve been handing out fewer plastic AND paper bags. (Even though paper seems more environmentally friendly, a tree still has to die to make that bag . . .)

Another change we’ve made recently is the ability to choose how many receipts our debit/credit machine prints off. Even though we always recycled the receipts that got left behind, the act of printing an unwanted receipt at all was wasting paper, ink, and energy (electrical energy, not mine). You’ve always had the option whether or not to take the itemized receipt, but now you’ll have even more choices.  Can you handle it?

And, as always, you are more than welcome to bring your own bags or containers to load up with all your bulk favorites. Just bring us your container beforehand so we can weigh it, then we’ll take off the difference at the end of your trip.

Thanks for going green with us! Every little bit makes a Better world.

Wonderful! I have so many bags for you! Decluttering before the move means I have to evaluate how many bags I really need. 😉

That’s a great idea! And thank you for allowing us to bring our own containers. I enjoy that!

You are an amazing business. I love every shopping exeperience at your store. This ‘take a bag, leave a bag’ is just one more awesome thing you do. Thank you for all the efforts you make.
